Bentley is set to join the uber-luxurious EV segment with an offering of their own. While some initially said it might just be a heavily redesigned Bentayga, that will not be the case, as the upcoming EV will have its own name.

Bentley has chosen the name “Torcal” for its upcoming electric crossover SUV. The Crewe-based marque said that the Torcal will usher in a new chapter for Bentley and will serve as the fourth model alongside the Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Bentayga.

“For 107 years, Bentleys have been the most incredibly complete cars - effortless performance, outstanding comfort, exquisite British handcraftsmanship using the best natural materials and a soundtrack with soul. Our new Torcal sets extraordinary benchmarks in every area that matters, and may just be the most considered car in our history,” said Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser. CEO of Bentley.

The Torcal takes its name from a natural landmark called El Torcal de Antequera, located in Andalusia, Spain. It's a dramatic limestone landscape of stacked rock formations, cliffs, and labyrinths that has been shaped by millions of years yet continues to evolve.

In addition, the name Torcal is derived from the Latin word “torquere”, which means to twist. More importantly, this is where the modern word “torque” originates from, which is fitting for a luxury Bentley that will have plenty of torque on tap. For the brand, Torcal will also imply effortless progression, another hallmark of every Bentley from the last 107 years.

Based on what our spies were able to capture before, the Bentley Torcal (which our spies thought would be called Mayon or Barnato) will share its architecture with the Porsche Cayenne Electric. That means it could get a 113 kWh battery pack, a range of up to 640 km on a full charge, and generate more than 1,000 PS from its dual electric motors.
