It looks like three-row plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are starting to become the new battleground of sorts for some automakers in the Philippines. With demand for electrified vehicles on the rise, it's not surprising brands are starting to introduce three-row models that are either EV, HEV, or PHEV.

Geely Motor Philippines Corporation finally dipped its toes into the PHEV market when it launched the EX5 EM-i, which is the plug-in variant of the EX5 EV. With a starting price of PHP 1.288 million, it has given the likes of the BYD Sealion 6 something to think about. In the future, the automaker might release yet another plug-in hybrid model.

Recently, the Department of Energy (DOE) updated its list of recognized PHEVs, and we noticed a new nameplate from Geely. It's called the M9 PHEV, and it measures 5205mm long, 1999mm wide, and 1800mm tall on a 3030mm wheelbase. This makes the Geely M9 the longest and largest vehicle yet from the Chinese brand, and it was first previewed as the Galaxy Starship concept during the 2024 Auto China.

Based on the DOE listing, the Geely M9 has a 1.5L turbocharged engine producing 115 kW (156 PS) and an electric motor producing 180 kW (244 PS). It is then assisted by a 41.46 kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery pack, which gives the M9 a range of up to 185 km without using a drop of fuel. With both the battery and turbocharged engine working together, however, it has a combined range of up to 1,300 km.

For now, Geely remains quiet regarding the M9 PHEV. But should the brand plan to offer the three-row, six-seater Geely M9 to Filipino customers, it could sway buyers from BYD, as well as those who might be considering a midsize turbo-diesel SUV, and instead opt for a plug-in hybrid
