Hondata, one of the most respected names in Honda and Acura engine management, has been acquired by Engineered Performance Technologies (EPT), expanding the performance group's growing portfolio of enthusiast-focused aftermarket brands.

The acquisition brings Hondata under the EPT umbrella, alongside Cobb Tuning, PRL Motorsports, AutoMeter, EcuTek, and GrimmSpeed. Headquartered in Austin, Texas, EPT is backed by Avante Mezzanine Partners and Promus Equity Partners and focuses on growing technology-driven automotive performance brands.

Hondata is best known in the Honda and Acura tuning community for its engine management systems and ECU tuning tools, particularly the s300 and FlashPro. These products transformed Honda performance tuning by allowing enthusiasts to reprogram the factory ECU instead of relying on aftermarket chips or standalone engine management systems, backed by comprehensive technical support.

Hondata says its founders and engineering team will remain in place to continue developing new products and software. With EPT's backing, the company will gain access to more engineering resources and manufacturing capabilities, helping to speed up the development of future tuning software and CANFlex systems for upcoming Honda and Acura models.

For enthusiasts, the acquisition could bring both benefits and concerns. On the upside, EPT's resources may bring about further product development and create a more integrated lineup of performance hardware and ECU tuning solutions, especially with PRL Motorsports already part of the group.

The acquisition also reflects the growing consolidation of the performance aftermarket industry. While additional investment could lead to more innovation and new products, some enthusiasts are concerned that fewer independently owned aftermarket brands may reduce competition and move it away from the customer-focused approach that made Hondata popular.

The long-term impact will depend on how independently Hondata operates under EPT. If it continues developing more effective tuning solutions while benefiting from EPT's resources, the acquisition could ultimately strengthen the brand's position in the aftermarket performance segment.
