The VinFast VF 6 is addressing one of the biggest concerns among electric vehicle buyers in the Philippines: how well an EV can handle heavy rain and flooding.

The electric crossover comes with an IP67-rated powertrain, giving its critical electrical components protection against dust and temporary water immersion. The VF 6 starts at PHP 1,409,000 with a battery subscription, while the battery-included version costs PHP 1,699,000.

For a country that regularly deals with intense monsoon rains, the IP67 rating is one of the VF 6's more relevant features.

An IP67 rating means the protected components are dust-tight and can withstand temporary immersion in water under standardized test conditions, typically up to 1 meter for as long as 30 minutes. It does not mean the vehicle can safely drive through any depth of floodwater, but it gives the powertrain an added layer of protection when exposed to water.

The VF 6 uses a 59.6-kWh battery and has more than 450 km of claimed NEDC range. Its electric motor produces 310 Nm of torque, giving the crossover the quick response expected from an electric powertrain.

Built for Philippine conditions

Flooding remains a familiar problem for motorists during the rainy season, particularly in Metro Manila and other densely populated areas where heavy rainfall can quickly overwhelm drainage systems.

The VF 6 has 170 mm of ground clearance, which can help when dealing with standing water and uneven urban roads. Ground clearance, however, should not be confused with a flood-wading rating. Drivers should avoid entering floodwater when its depth or current cannot be safely assessed.

The crossover also gets electronic stability control, traction control and electronic brakeforce distribution. These systems help maintain stability and braking performance when roads become wet or slippery.

For visibility in bad weather, the VF 6 comes with heated side mirrors and defogging functions. It also gets a 360-degree camera, blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The higher VF 6 Plus variant is equipped with eight airbags, while the Eco comes with four.

An EV advantage in traffic

The VF 6's electric powertrain can also be useful during the long traffic jams that often accompany heavy rain.

Unlike a conventional gasoline or diesel vehicle, an EV does not need to keep an engine running while stationary. The VF 6 can remain switched on and ready to move without idling a combustion engine while stuck in traffic.

The crossover can travel more than 450 km on a full charge based on the NEDC test cycle. With DC fast charging, VinFast claims the battery can go from 10% to 70% in around 35 minutes.

The VF 6 also uses a rear multi-link suspension, which is designed to provide better control over uneven surfaces while improving ride comfort.

Starting at PHP 1.409 million

Price is another part of the VF 6’s appeal in the increasingly competitive electric crossover market.

The VF 6 Eco is priced at PHP 1,409,000 with the battery subscription option. Buyers who want the battery included pay PHP 1,699,000. VinFast backs the vehicle with a seven-year or 160,000-km vehicle warranty, while the battery gets a 10-year or 200,000-km warranty.

The company also offers free unlimited charging at V-Green charging stations until March 31, 2029, along with a home wall charger and installation.

For Filipino buyers considering an EV, the VF 6 combines an IP67-rated powertrain, 170-mm ground clearance, driver-assistance technology, and a starting price below PHP 1.5 million.

The IP67 rating does not make the VF 6 flood-proof. It does, however, address one of the practical concerns surrounding EV ownership in a country where heavy rain and sudden flooding are part of the annual driving experience.
