After getting recognized by the Department of Energy (DOE) and also receiving approval from the Land Transportation Office (LTO), MG Motor Philippines wants to take on the likes of the BYD Atto 3 and GAC Aion V with its own electric compact crossover SUV.

You guessed right, the MG S5 electric crossover has officially been confirmed by MG Motor Philippines, and it’s set to be launched sometime in August. Official pricing has yet to be revealed, but we won’t be surprised if it will be competitive given that MG is currently selling the G50 PHEV and is significantly undercutting other electrified MPVs in the market.

Specifications for the MG S5 EV have yet to be revealed by MG Motor Philippines. But based on the specifications the DOE currently has, we already have a good idea of what to expect come launch day. For starters, it will get a single rear electric motor that makes 125 kW or 170 PS with 250 Nm of torque. Power is then supplied by a 49 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which gives the S5 a range of up to 415, based on the NEDC standard.

Recharging the MG S5 can be done in two ways: a 7 kW Type 2 AC charger or a CCS2 DC charger that’s rated at 120 kW. MG says recharging the S5 with the former from 10% to 100% can be done in 8.5 hours. The latter, meanwhile, can replenish the S5’s battery from 30% to 80% in only 24 minutes. It also has four regenerative braking modes: Low, Medium, High, and Adaptive. It even comes with a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function to power up devices or appliances.

Size-wise, the MG S5 measures 4476mm long, 1849mm wide, and 1621mm on a 2730mm wheelbase. It also has a cargo capacity of 453 liters with the rear seats deployed and up to 1,441 liters if the rear seats are folded. A set of 17-inch alloy wheels comes as standard, along with 215/60 series tires.

When it comes to amenities, the S5 EV will be available with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, fabric seats, automatic climate control with rear A/C vents, smart keyless entry, a host of USB charging ports, and the brand’s MG Pilot suite of advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS).

Expect MG Motor Philippines to release more details about the MG S5 EV closer to launch in the coming weeks.
