Several weeks ago, Kia Philippines officially confirmed that the Sportage will be making a comeback. But instead of being powered by a turbo-diesel engine, the refreshed fifth-generation Kia Sportage will instead get a turbo-hybrid powertrain that's similar to the Kia Sorento and Kia Carnival HEV models.

Fast forward to the first week of June, and the Department of Energy (DOE) has updated its list of recognized hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). There, the agency has added the Kia Sportage HEV as one of the latest hybrids in the country.

Based on the DOE listing, the Kia Sportage HEV will be available in two distinct variants: EX and SX. Both will be 2WD crossover SUVs and will measure 4685mm long, 1865mm wide, and 1660mm tall on a 2755mm wheelbase.

Like the regulatory approval Kia Philippines received last month, the PH-spec Sportage will get a 1598cc (or 1.6L) turbocharged gasoline engine that makes 132.4 kW or 180 PS and 265 Nm of torque. It will then be assisted by an electric motor that makes 47.7 kW or 65 PS with 264 Nm of torque and a 1.49 kWh electric battery. Power is then sent to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Other features of the Kia Sportage HEV for the Philippines have yet to be revealed. However, we can expect the electrified crossover to come with leather or fabric upholstery, 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels (depending on the variant), a touchscreen media display with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, a power sunroof, full LED lighting, a wireless charging pad, and more.

With Kia set to be present at the 2026 Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) later this week, perhaps we'll see the return of the Kia Sportage at the World Trade Center Metro Manila in Pasay City on June 4.
