Volkswagen: We will keep selling, developing combustion engines
Volkswagen keeps their electric mobility targets realistic
Right now, the automotive industry sees electrification as the future. Just about every manufacturer has plans for electric mobility all within the century. Volkswagen is one of the automakers that led the charge, but they have also set realistic expectations.
During their media day, Volkswagen presented their plans and the expansion of their electric vehicle portfolio. However, CEO Herbert Diess said that the transformation to full electrification cannot happen overnight. He said that they will continue selling ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles during the transition phase. At the same time, he added that the transition will vary from region to region.

It's good news for those who are still apprehensive about EVs. In the meantime, Volkswagen says they will continue the development of ICEs alongside electric powertrains. The German automaker adds that they will optimize the efficiency of the traditional engine. That said, there was no mention of diesel power, but it will likely soldier on through the decade.
By 2030, Volkswagen expects 50% of its sales will come from electric vehicles. Looking further, they're expecting most of their models will have electric power by 2035. To boost the development of electric powertrains, Volkswagen will use the profits from their fuel-fed vehicles.

But right now, we see Volkswagen slowly phasing in electric power in their line-up. Most of their models are already available with plug-in hybrid power, including the Tiguan, Lamando, Golf, Passat, Arteon, and Touareg. They also have several pure electric models such as the ID.3, ID.4,e-Up, e-Golf, e-Lavida, and e-Tharu, to name a few.
With their plug-in hybrid and BEV range, the electric revolution at Volkswagen is well underway. But Diess' statement is reassuring for those who still prefer internal combustion.
