Remember when BYD surprised the hatchback world when they teased the Dolphin G DM-i plug-in hybrid (PHEV)? Well, after whetting the appetite of fans & enthusiasts, BYD has officially launched an electrified hatchback, and boy, does it impress.

Starting with the most important aspect, the Dolphin G DM-i is powered by a 1.5L inline-four engine that makes 95 PS with 120 Nm of torque. It serves mainly as a generator for the onboard battery pack, which powers an electric motor that's available in two states of tune: 176 PS with 210 Nm of torque and 212 PS with 210 Nm of torque.

Speaking of batteries, the entry-level version has a 7.42 kWh battery pack, while the top-of-the-line version has a bigger 18.3 kWh battery. The former has a maximum EV range of up to 40 km, while the latter has an electric range of nearly 105 km. With a fully charged battery and a full tank of gas, the BYD Dolphin G can do up to 1,040 km (1,018 km for the base model Dolphin G).

When it comes to recharging the battery, the Dolphin G supports 3.3 kW (or 6.6 kW) of AC charging and 39 kW DC fast charging. The former can fully recharge the battery from 15% to 100% between 2.8 and 2.9 hours, while the latter can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in as little as 26 minutes. Last but certainly not least, the range-topping Dolphin G comes with a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function that's rated at 3.3 kW.

Size-wise, the Dolphing G PHEV measures 4160mm long, 1825mm wide, and 1575mm tall on a 2610mm wheelbase. It also tips the scales between 1440 kg and 1555 kg, can come with 16-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels, and has a 42-liter fuel tank.

Inside, the Dolphin G welcomes occupants into a high-tech and comfy cabin. The driver is treated to an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel, while the center dashboard comes with either a 10.1-inch or 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment display, depending on the variant.

Don't expect to find a gear selector on the center console, as BYD opted to put an electronic column shifter. The result is more cabin space between the front seats for cubby holes, cupholders, and a 15W wireless charging pad. It is then complemented by physical buttons and switches for the HVAC system near the lower dashboard.

Other key features available in the Dolphin G PHEV include an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rear USB charging ports, an 8-speaker sound system, power-folding side mirrors, multi-color ambient lighting, a panoramic glass roof with a power sunshade, and a suite of intelligent driver aids, including a 360-degree camera.

When it comes to luggage space, BYD says that with the rear seats deployed, the Dolphin G can store up to 425 liters worth of luggage, and is complemented by a 45-liter storage compartment underneath the floor. Fold down the 60:40 split rear seats, however, and cargo capacity increases to a colossal 1,225 liters, which is more than enough to haul plenty of tall or long items with ease.

With the BYD Dolphin G PHEV set to be available in Europe, we're curious if BYD plans to make it available in other markets, like the Philippines.
