Aston Martin's DBS nameplate to return as new flagship model
Aston Martin DBS Superleggera to debut as successor to the Vanquish
The DBS nameplate was first introduced back in 1967 when Aston Martin introduced a new grand tourer as a successor to the DB6. The British marque then revived the name in 2007 for the new DBS, which was based on the DB9, replacing the Vanquish as the brand's flagship model. After being succeed by the current-generation Vanquish in 2012, the DBS name has since remained dormant, until now.
Aston Martin has officially announced that the upcoming DBS Superleggera is slated to debut later this year, marking the return of the iconic name. Meanwhile the Superleggera monicker is a nod to the brand's history with Touring Superleggera.
“When you hear the name DBS Superleggera, you know what it is. It’s the definitive Aston Martin Super GT. It’s an icon, a statement and this one will be no different. We’ve pushed the boundaries of performance and design to give this car a distinct character and ensure it’s worthy of the heritage and weight that this name carries,”said Aston Martin's chief creative officer Marek Reichman.
Once launched, the third-iteration of the DBS is set to become the brand's new flagship model, replacing the current-generation Vanquish. For now, details regarding the DBS Superleggera are scarce. The only thing Aston Martin has revealed, apart from the teaser photo, is that the car will “feature the highest levels of performance, craftmanship and design.”
Under the hood, the DBS Superleggera is expected to use Aston Martin's 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 which is also found on the DB11. Do expect, however, that the DBS will have a huge increase in power, possibly up to the 700 PS mark. As for the design, the Super GT could borrow design influences from the DB11 albeit with more aggressive styling.
