You can plan the perfect race event, but you can’t plan the weather.

Held over the weekend, the Yokohama World Time Attack Challenge (WTAC) was shaping up for a spectacular finale at Sydney Motorsport Park, with drivers laying down blistering times across the classes. But just over an hour before the Superlap Shootout, strong winds and rain swept across Eastern Creek, forcing organizers to call off the final session.

For most of the weekend, Sydney enjoyed clear spring conditions, helping draw one of the event’s biggest crowds yet. Thousands of fans packed Sydney Motorsport Park for the time attack competition, drifting action, and the Shannons StylizeD Show and Shine.

It all changed when a sudden shift in the weather made the track unsuitable for the fastest cars running on full slicks. Prioritizing safety, organizers decided to suspend all track action and allowed the times recorded in dry conditions to stand. Despite the lack of a final showdown, the event still delivered plenty of headline-worthy performances.

Todd Hazelwood has claimed back-to-back Yokohama WTAC titles, winning the Emtron Pro Class in the Tanuki Racing Nissan S13 with a blistering 1:19.3030 lap in a rain-shortened event. The 1,350+ horsepower time-attack machine features extreme aerodynamics and a full carbon-fiber body. Hazelwood previously won the 2025 WTAC title with a 1:18.169 lap.

One of the standout performances came in the MoTeC Pro Open class, where Robert Nguyen set a 1:20.0050 in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. The lap broke his own class record and was significantly quicker than Nathan Morcom's 1:22.2850.

In the GCG Open Class, Darren Bishop took the win in an Evo 7 with a 1:27.4810, ahead of Jamie McGloin's 1:31.0170. Alex Michalsky dominated the Haltech Clubsprint category in his Plazmaman Mitsubishi Evo 6, recording a 1:29.9280. Jamal Assaad finished second with a 1:30.5370, also driving an Evo 6.

Meanwhile, John Boston claimed the Yokohama-Advan NEOVA Tuner Class in a Southern BM BMW M2 Competition with a 1:37.6940. John Nguyen finished second in the Sydney Composite Ospire Toyota Supra with a 1:38.0010.

The Plazmaman Pro Am class was won by Drew Hall and the Croydon Racing Developments Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R after posting a 1:26.3790. Aleck Kazakovski followed in a Subaru WRX STI with a 1:26.8380.

The rain may have prevented the Superlap Shootout from delivering one final battle between the event's fastest cars, but the 2026 Yokohama WTAC still provided plenty of spectacle, with fierce competition, spectacular builds, drifting action, and a new MoTeC Pro Open class record.

Ultimately, the decision to call off the final session ensured driver safety while preserving the dry-weather times that defined this year's competition.
