Laguna Seca renames “Corkscrew” after racing legend Alex Zanardi
Iconic corner will officially become the “Zanardi Corkscrew” nearly 30 years after his legendary pass there
One of motorsport’s most iconic corners is getting a new name in honor of one of racing’s most memorable drivers.
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca has officially renamed its famous “Corkscrew” corner the “Zanardi Corkscrew,” commemorating Alex Zanardi and the legendary move that became known simply as “The Pass.”

Located at the top of the circuit’s famous uphill section, the Corkscrew is a blind, left-right combination comprising Turns 8 and 8A. Drivers crest the hill with the track disappearing from view before plunging downhill through the two corners, dropping approximately 33 meters (108 feet) in elevation over just 137 meters (450 feet).

Its dramatic elevation change and blind entry make it one of motorsport’s most challenging corners, and a popular feature in racing simulators such as Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport, Assetto Corsa, and other racing titles.

It was here, on September 8, 1996, that Zanardi made one of CART’s most famous overtakes. Driving the No. 4 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Honda Reynard in the season finale, he made a daring move on Bryan Herta entering the Corkscrew on the final lap. Zanardi completed the pass and went on to win the race, with the maneuver becoming known simply as “The Pass.”
The timing of the dedication is especially significant, coming just days before the 30th anniversary of that famous move. Zanardi finished his CART career with two championships and 15 race victories, establishing himself as one of the series’ most accomplished drivers.

His legacy extends far beyond motorsport. After a devastating 2001 racing crash resulted in the loss of both legs, Zanardi returned to competition as a handcyclist and went on to become a Paralympic gold medalist.
The dedication ceremony will be attended by several figures from Zanardi’s racing career and the IndyCar community, including Chip Ganassi, Max Papis and Doug Boles.
Already synonymous with spectacular racing, the Corkscrew will now carry Zanardi’s name as a permanent reminder of one of the circuit’s and motorsport’s most unforgettable moments.
