Mazda spotted testing dedicated electric SUV platform at the Nürburgring
Mazda electric test mule sighted as dedicated EV project reportedly shifts to 2029
Mazda appears to be quietly advancing its next-generation electric-vehicle architecture, with fresh spy photos capturing an early engineering test mule putting in laps around the Nürburgring.

The prototype running around the iconic German circuit presents a curious sight. Underneath what looks like a shortened, modified shell borrowed from the large three-row CX-90 sits Mazda’s first scalable, in-house dedicated electric platform. Because early test mules are cobbled together purely to evaluate mechanical hardware and chassis calibration, the bulky bodywork is temporary and offers no real hints about the final production styling.
Despite using a large SUV body shell for testing, industry observers suggest the final production vehicle will likely land closer to the popular CX-5 in overall footprint, targeting the high-volume compact crossover segment.

Engineers face a unique task in tuning the electric platform. True to the brand's Jinba-Ittai philosophy, Mazda aims to replicate the intuitive steering response, balanced handling, and driver engagement of its internal combustion models within a heavy, battery-electric package.

However, buyers hoping to see a showroom-ready vehicle anytime soon may have to wait a bit longer. While original plans pointed toward a market debut around 2027, recent reports indicate Mazda has postponed the project's launch to at least 2029. The strategic shift will allow the Hiroshima automaker to focus near-term capital on hybrid systems and next-generation combustion tech while global EV demand settles into a steadier trajectory.
With early platform testing now progressing under heavy test mules, official production-bodied prototypes are expected to hit public roads closer to the end of the decade.
