Honda just converted this S2000 into an electric car
This Honda S2000 is not for purists
The S2000 is one of the most sought after models by Honda enthusiasts even to this today. Introduced in 1999, the open-top sports car featured a double-wishbone suspension, making one of the best handling Honda’s at the time. But, its most prominent feature would be the 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated 250 horsepower F20C motor under the hood which revs to 9,000 RPM. Honda France, however, decided to ditch this engine and dropped an electric motor in its place.
Built for a customer in the region, Honda France announced on their Facebook page that they have retrofitted an electric motor into this particular S2000. As the photo shows, the AP2 is parked in an electric vehicle (EV) parking slot. It is also using the charging station with the charging port integrated plugged into where the fuel lid used to be.
Honda France did not disclose what powertrain was fitted in the S2000. They only mentioned that it now uses a “100% electric engine”. Interestingly, there is a link to a website of the all-new Honda e, possibly hinting what’s underneath. With that in mind, it is likely that the S2000 now uses the same powertrain as that of Honda’s new electric city car. Should that be the case, the electric S2000 in question would continue to be rear-wheel drive. However, power output is now down to only 154 horsepower.
Converting older vehicles into electric power is nothing new. In fact, other automakers such as Volkswagen and Aston Martin, have already been doing it for quite some time. It ensures that the car can still be driven should a ban on internal-combustion engines take place in the future. Furthermore, Honda France converting this S2000 into an EV is also inline with their goals of offering a 100% electrified model range in the future.
An electric S2000 will surely split hairs especially among enthusiasts around the world. One thing for sure though, this isn't for honda purists.
