Eighth-generation BMW 3 Series to get Neue Klasse design, four- and six-cylinder engines
We've already seen BMW reveal the next-generation 3 Series after the brand revealed the i3, which gets the brand's Neue Klasse design. But where is the internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the eighth-generation BMW 3 Series?
Well, we need not wonder anymore after the German automaker revealed the official camouflaged photos of the all-new 3 Series doing laps at the brand's test tracks in Southern France. Despite wearing a camouflaged livery, it's quite apparent that the all-new 3 Series will get the Neue Klasse design.

According to BMW, the Neue Klasse 3 Series will feature a new interpretation of the brand's signature headlight design. Moreover, it will have eye-catching surfaces, a long wheelbase with short overhangs, and a modern 2.5-box design. Based on the overall look, it seems BMW will ensure the i3 and the new 3 Series can be easily distinguished with some design elements.
In terms of handling, BMW claims the next-generation 3 Series will keep its agile handling, thanks to the aforementioned longer wheelbase and wider front & rear tracks. It will also come with a double-joint spring front axle and a five-link rear axle with anti-roll bar mounts with high preload on both axles to improve roll control. When it comes to wheel choices, the all-new 3 Series is now available with optional 20-inch alloys wrapped in 245/35 tires in the front and 275/35 tires in the back.

But what about its powertrain choices? Well, BMW has confirmed that the all-new 3 Series will be available with four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines that benefit from 48V mild-hybrid technology. However, BMW has only revealed one powertrain for now: the range-topping M350 xDrive. It will be the only six-cylinder available in the standard 3 Series and will make 457 PS and 580 Nm of torque from a TwinPowerTurbo inline-six.
The M350 xDrive will also come with an 8-speed automatic gearbox with AWD, adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential, and variable sport steering. From a standstill, BMW says the M350 xDrive can hit 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. To make things more fun, the M350 xDrive will come with Drift Mode as standard. Once activated, it sends all power to the rear wheels and turns off dynamic stability control, allowing drivers to swing out the tail of the 3 Series.

“The BMW 3 Series has set standards for driving dynamics for several decades now – and thus serves as a symbol of Sheer Driving Pleasure,” said Dr Mihiar Ayoubi, SVP of Driving Experience Development. “With the new generation, we are building on this strength once again through the perfect interplay of chassis hardware and a continuously optimised and intelligent BMW Driving Stack. In this way, we are elevating the driving experience in the new BMW 3 Series to a new level, precise, assured and unmistakably BMW.
Expect BMW to fully reveal the all-new 3 Series before the year ends.
