Wagon version of all-new BMW i3 EV spotted

When BMW revealed the all-new i3 (not to be confused with the old i3 hatchback), it was our first-ever look at the eighth-generation 3 Series. With its Neue Klasse design language and all-electric powertrain delivering nearly 470 PS and over 640 Nm of torque, the BMW i3 has big shoes to fill.

Since BMW already has a sedan version of the i3, it's only natural for the German automaker to have a wagon version as well. Fortunately, our spies were able to take photos of the i3 Touring being driven recently in Europe.

Despite the subtle camouflage in the back, it's quite clear that this prototype vehicle is the upcoming BMW i3 Touring. While the front fascia is the same as the regular i3, the rear and side profile get the most obvious changes.

For starters, it gets a more athletic design, thanks to the wagon body, curvaceous rear body panels, and stylish tailgate. While most of the tailgate is still covered in a camouflage livery, it looks like it will have an edgy design to go along with the Neue Klasse look.

Also worth mentioning on the i3 Touring are the thin LED taillights in the back. They almost look like the ones on the i3 Sedan but appear to be thinner in design to complement the i3 Touring's sportier looks.

No powertrain specifications have been revealed for the i3 Touring, but we won't be surprised if it is the same one found on the i3 50 xDrive, which gets a pair of electric motors producing 469 PS with 645 Nm of torque, an 800V architecture, and up to 400 kW of DC charging. When hooked up to a 400 kW fast DC charger, BMW says the i3 can have up to 400 km of range in just 10 minutes.

While there's no specific timeline yet for the i3 Touring's launch, the fact that BMW is already testing a near-production version with light camouflage likely means the brand is getting close to the big reveal. The only question now is, will the i3 Touring introduce more EV versions besides the 50 xDrive?
