It seems Chinese automakers just can't get enough of making 4x4 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUVs that can go off-road. The latest brand to join the bandwagon is Geely, and they have just given us a glimpse of their upcoming 4x4 plug-in hybrid off-roader.

This is the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700, and it's poised to take on the road less traveled while emitting fewer carbon emissions. Featuring a boxy exterior, round LED headlights, a tall ride height, and one heck of a powertrain, the Galaxy Cruiser 700 is one serious off-roader.

At the heart of the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700 is a plug-in hybrid system that pairs a turbocharged engine and a trio of electric motors. Two of the e-motors are placed in the rear axle, while the other motor drives the front wheels. Combined with a high-voltage battery pack that has yet to be revealed, the PHEV 4x4 delivers a combined system output of 830 kW or 1,129 PS.

With a curb weight of around 2,880 kg, Geely says the Galaxy Cruiser 700 has a power-to-weight ratio of 392 PS per ton. Compared to the Jetour G700 and BYD YangWang U8 PHEV off-roaders, which weigh 3,063 kg and 3,590 kg, respectively, Geely's new plug-in hybrid 4x4 is essentially a lightweight.

Other details about the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700 have yet to be revealed. But with some serious power under the hood and the ability to travel on electric power on long distances without having to deal with a heavy weight penalty, the Galaxy Cruiser 700 could give other plug-in hybrid SUVs something to think about.

Once launched, the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700 will have a dynamic drivetrain control system that the automaker claims can switch between FWD, AWD, and RWD modes. It will come with a crab-walk feature, automatic obstacle avoidance, and even satellite communication while in the wilderness. Last but not least, Geely says it will have a water wading depth of up to 800mm.

With GAC already teasing the Yue 7, it looks like BYD's Denza and YangWang luxury brands that offer plug-in hybrid 4x4s may also want to check their rearview mirrors for the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700.
