Cole Trickle Returns: Tom Cruise announces 'Days of Thunder' sequel for Summer 2028
Tom Cruise reprises role as Cole Trickle in 'Days of Thunder' sequel co-starring Anne Hathaway
Nearly four decades after Cole Trickle first tore up the asphalt at the Daytona International Speedway, Tom Cruise is officially getting back behind the wheel. The Hollywood star took to his social media channels to announce a sequel to his 1990 NASCAR classic Days of Thunder, revealing that Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway will join him for the high-octane follow-up.
Paramount Pictures has officially locked in June 2, 2028, for the film's global theatrical release.
The announcement was made from the legendary Daytona track, coinciding with NASCAR’s regular-season finale. In a post shared across Cruise's platforms, the duo posed in front of a stock car wearing the iconic green-and-yellow livery made famous in Tony Scott's original film.
Cruise will reprise his role as hot-headed driver Cole Trickle, while Hathaway is set to step into the racing world as a NASCAR team owner and engineer.
Directed by Jonathan Levine (50/50, Long Shot) and written by Will Staples, the sequel sees Cruise re-teaming with legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer, alongside Tommy Harper. Bruckheimer, who produced the original 1990 film as well as 2022's smash-hit Top Gun: Maverick and Apple's recent F1 movie, has been vocal about revisiting the high-speed stock car drama.

The original Days of Thunder introduced NASCAR to a global audience, embedding immortal racing quotes like "Rubbin', son, is racin'" into automotive pop culture. While plot details for the sequel remain tightly under wraps, Paramount confirmed that the project will be filmed specifically for IMAX and other premium large-format screens, promising audiences immersive high-speed cinema when it hits theaters in Summer 2028.
