The Ford Escort is actually still alive

The Ford Escort is actually still alive
Ford still makes and sells the Escort in China
If there’s one Ford model that we haven’t heard about in a long time, it’s the Escort. Most people would associate the Escort with the early generation models, specifically the sought-after Mexico and RS2000 Mk1 and Mk2 variants. However, the sedan was killed off in 2002 and was technically replaced by the Focus.

Well, it seems the Escort name has continued to live on. It’s no longer sold in Europe or North America, though. Instead, it’s now a China model based on the Focus sedan. While it may look very modern and similar to the brand’s current lineup of models, it's actually based on the second-generation Focus, which was offered from 2004 to 2011. Ford also updated the model recently for 2021.

On the topic of design, the Escort features a large grille with a mesh design. It is then flanked by a pair of sharp-looking LED headlights. The front bumper features a sporty design, and it looks similar to the sedans offered by Ford in other countries. At the rear sits a pair of slim LED taillights and an equally sporty-looking bumper with twin-exit exhausts.

Inside, it’s very modern too. The cabin is equipped with a bunch of features and amenities that most modern vehicles would offer. You wouldn’t expect this was based on a model from 2004. The highlight of the 2021 model’s interior, however, would be the new dual 10.25-inch screens. As a result, the Escort does have a somewhat Mercedes-Benz feel. The sedan was also made safer with six airbags as standard.

Under the hood, the sole engine option is a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated mill good for 122 horsepower. Power is sent to the front wheels (sorry rear-wheel-drive Escort fans) through either a 6-speed manual or an automatic gearbox.

With Ford Philippines offering the Territory here, which coincidentally is sourced from China, we can’t help but think whether the brand should also start selling sedans again. Remember, Ford no longer offers sedans or hatchbacks locally. But with the 2021 Escort, they might be able to capture a slice of the sedan market.
