Spied: Next-Gen Hyundai Kona SUV in Spanish summer testing with less disguise
Seltos-derived hybrid powertrain and E-AWD detailed in latest Hyundai Kona spy shots
It appears the Hyundai Kona is gearing up for a substantial mid-cycle evolution. Fresh spy photos captured during high-altitude testing in Spain reveal the subcompact crossover dropping much of its heavy vinyl cladding, offering a much clearer look at its revised proportions and styling direction.

Judging by the latest prototype sightings, Hyundai seems to be leaning into a boxier, more upright front end with a visibly higher hood line and revised wheel arches, giving the crossover a slightly more rugged appearance.
Beyond the visual changes, early details surrounding the prototype point to major mechanical upgrades under the skin. Reports suggest the upcoming Kona will adopt the revised 1.6-liter hybrid powertrain recently introduced in the all-new Kia Seltos. In standard front-wheel-drive trim, the setup is expected to produce 154 hp while prioritizing fuel efficiency.

More interestingly, industry watchers speculate that an electric all-wheel-drive (E-AWD) variant could also join the lineup. By mounting a dedicated electric motor on the rear axle rather than using a conventional driveshaft, total output could climb to around 178 hp. The updated hybrid system is also rumored to inherit Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities, allowing owners to power external appliances directly from the vehicle’s battery, a feature typically reserved for full-electric vehicles.
Inside, the cabin is expected to ditch its current layout in favor of Hyundai Motor Group’s latest Pleos Connect software suite, bringing a more streamlined dashboard, intuitive menus, and advanced connected features into the subcompact segment.

As with most prototype encounters, the testing process brings a few colorful moments. While automotive photographers were simply doing their jobs capturing the unreleased crossover, the driver greeted the camera with a rather expressive hand gesture from behind the glass, proof that even test engineers get a little camera-shy when testing unannounced models on public roads. Our spies wished they were given the "Korean heart sign" instead.
