BMW M5 Neue Klasse refresh inches closer to big reveal

Since the start of the year, our spies have been able to capture photos of the upcoming BMW 5 Series Neue Klasse facelift. Heck, our spies were even able to spot the refreshed M5 Touring, and it also gets the Neue Klasse treatment.

Unfortunately, we have yet to see the updated BMW M5 (and 5 Series) Sedan sporting the Neue Klasse look...until now.

Our spy photographers were recently at the Nürburgring and were able to spot the upcoming M5 refresh. The heavily camouflaged high-performance sedan features a new set of LED headlights that appear to be smaller than what the current models have. Also new are smaller dual kidney grilles, which is a stark departure from the current versions, which have a larger set.

Around the back, the changes are far more subtle since the LED taillights may only get minor changes. The rear bumper appears new, however, with a more bulbous yet aerodynamic design. If anything, we can expect the Neue Klasse M5 (and 5 Series) to have only minor cosmetic changes to the rear fascia.

As far as the powertrain is concerned, the Neue Klasse M5 will most likely carry over the electrified 4.4L TwinPower Turbo V8 engine. The engine alone already makes an impressive 585 PS with 750 Nm of torque. But thanks to a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system via an electric motor and an 18.6 kWh battery pack, the latest M5 produces a combined 727 PS and 1,000 Nm of torque.

Power is then sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, which allows the M5 to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds (3.6 seconds for the M5 Touring). Both the sedan and wagon versions of the current M5 can hit a top speed of over 300 km/h. On battery power alone, the M5 can travel up to 70 km and can even reach speeds of up to 140 km/h without using a drop of fuel. Recharging the M5's PHEV system can be done via an 11 kW AC charging station.

With BMW busy testing the M5 at the Nürburgring, it might only be a matter of time before the brand officially reveals the Neue Klasse M5 in both Sedan and Touring models.
