Report: All-new Mitsubishi Pajero will not get a V6 option
Unlike previous generations, Mitsubishi will not offer a V6 engine for the all-new Pajero
A couple of weeks ago, Mitsubishi finally revealed the all-new Pajero SUV. Now sharing its platform with the Triton pickup truck, the 7-seater 4x4 SUV is set to give the likes of the Ford Everest and perhaps even the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado something to think about.
However, some fans of the Pajero are wondering if the all-new SUV would eventually get a V6 under the hood. After all, the previous generation of the Pajero (and older iterations) were available with either a 3.2L turbo-diesel engine or a naturally aspirated 3.8L V6.
For the fifth-generation Pajero, the latest SUV is only available with a 2.4L turbo-diesel MIVEC engine that puts out 204 PS and 480 Nm of torque. Power is then transferred to an 8-speed automatic gearbox and Super Select 4WD II with Super-All Wheel Control and Active Yaw Control.

Since it only gets one engine option, some have speculated that the all-new Pajero could eventually get a bigger engine in the form of a V6. However, Mitsubishi has ruled out that plan. According to a report by Australian publication Car Sales, Mitsubishi Product Strategy Division Chief Kunitoshi Itagaki said that there are currently no plans to introduce a new powertrain beyond the 2.4L turbo-diesel.
“For this moment, we can't say anything about the future, but when developing a global model, we study a wide range of powertrains that are based on market needs, regulation, performance, fuel economy, and driving range. But this time we select the 2.4-litre [diesel] engine and actually, we have no additional powertrain plans at this moment, including a turbocharged V6 gasoline engine or some other engines to announce at this time,” said Itagaki.

So does this mean the all-new Pajero will only get one engine in the form of the 2.4L MIVEC turbo-diesel? Not exactly, as the brand is reportedly working on a hybrid version. In fact, Itagaki said that future powertrain options may include electrified versions to meet market or regulatory needs.
“So we will continue to study the best future options, including maybe electrification and market needs, regulation, and our technology,” added Itagaki.
Besides possibly giving the all-new Pajero flagship 4x4 a hybrid powertrain, the automaker will reportedly also make a hybrid C-segment crossover of the Pajero, as well as a kei car version. This is not surprising since Mitsubishi has already confirmed that the all-new Pajero will grow into a family of models. That means the automaker may release new or succeeding versions of the Pajero iO, Pajero Jr., and the Pajero Mini.
