Just before the end of May, we saw the Department of Energy (DOE) recognize the Hyundai Staria HEV as a hybrid electric vehicle. With that, it looks like Hyundai Motor Philippines Inc. (HMPH) is finally ready to launch its electrified MPV.

Based on the DOE's listing, the Staria HEV will reportedly be available in two variants: GLS 6AT 9S (9-seater) and Premium Plus 6AT 7S (7-seater). However, it looks like we can expect more variants to be available after the DOE recently updated its list of recognized HEVs.

According to recent updates, there will be three additional variants of the Staria HEV for the Philippine market. These are HEV Premium 6AT 9S, HEV GL 6AT 9S, and HEV GL 6AT 11S. That means there will likely be a total of five variants available for the Staria HEV.

While specifications have yet to be revealed, all of the Staria HEV models will likely be powered by a 1.6L turbo-hybrid powertrain, which is already seeing use in the Santa Fe HEV. The DOE mentioned that the Staria HEV makes a maximum engine power of 132.4 kW or 180 PS, while its electric motor puts out 54 kW or 73 PS. Combined, the Staria HEV produces a total system output of 245 PS and 367 Nm of torque, matching what the electrified MPV makes in other markets.

Heck, the Staria HEV's closest sibling, the Kia Carnival Hybrid, also uses a 1.6L turbo-hybrid system that delivers the same power. And just like the Carnival Hybrid and the Santa Fe HEV, the Hyundai Staria HEV will likely be paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox that drives the front wheels.

Since the Hyundai Staria HEV will be available in 7-seater, 9-seater, and 11-seater variants, we won't be surprised if it caters to a wide array of customers who are looking for an electrified family mover. The only question now is, what will happen to the Hyundai Staria's diesel-powered variants, as electrification continues to become more popular in the Philippines?
