Honda to shut down the Civic Type R factory
Announcements regarding manufacturing restructuring by Honda
Honda is going to make some big changes with their global manufacturing hubs.
In an announcement, the Honda Motor Company said that they will shut down two of their overseas automobile factories: their plant in Turkey, and their plant in Swindon in the United Kingdom.
Honda says the decision to shut down the factories is a response to the company accelerating their commitment to electric or electrified automobiles as well as other changes in the global auto industry.

“In light of the unprecedented changes that are affecting our industry, it is vital that we accelerate our electrification strategy and restructure our global operations accordingly,” said Mr. Katsushi Inoue, Chief Officer for European Regional Operations for Honda Motor Company. “As a result, we have had to take this difficult decision to consult our workforce on how we might prepare our manufacturing network for the future. This has not been taken lightly and we deeply regret how unsettling today’s announcement will be for our people.”

Both of these factories produce the Honda Civic, with the Turkish facility making the Civic 4-door sedan and the U.K. facility making the Civic hatchback. The U.K. plant is also the factory that is responsible for manufacturing the Civic Type R, and has been doing so for well over a decade.
Honda Turkiye A.S. currently rolls out 38,000 units per year. The U.K. factory produces almost four times that number at 150,000 units annually. The shutdown of the U.K. factory means that no more Honda automobiles will be produced in the European continent.
The plants will be shuttered come 2021, wherein it is likely that Honda will manufacture a new generation Civic elsewhere.
