Ferrari has essentially taken its GT3 hardware, removed the rulebook, added more power, and unleashed it for the track.

Ferrari has unveiled the 296 GT Modificata, an extreme track-only, two-seater developed exclusively for its Club Competizioni GT program, an exclusive non-competitive track series run by Ferrari Corse Clienti that allows owners of eligible Ferrari GT race cars to drive on some of the world’s most prestigious circuits.

Revealed at Ferrari Racing Days in Budapest, Hungary, the Modificata shares the 296’s basic proportions, but takes its performance far beyond the road car and even Ferrari’s 296 GT3 Evo. Unlike the race car, which is bound by homologation and Balance of Performance (BoP) racing regulations, the Modificata is free to pursue outright track performance.

Its rear mid-mounted 2.9-liter, 120-degree V6 produces around 720 horsepower, or roughly 128 hp more than the BoP-limited 296 GT3 Evo. Ferrari says it could lap Fiorano around three seconds quicker than its racing counterpart, which says a lot about its performance.

The V6 engine gets revised internals, camshafts, induction, intercoolers and turbochargers, with bespoke turbo internals inspired by the 499P Modificata. Power is sent through a revised six-speed sequential gearbox with a carbon clutch.

The bodywork has been heavily reworked for the circuit, with exposed carbon fiber, a slotted front splitter, a deep diffuser, and a large rear wing. Center-lock wheels and Pirelli P-Zero racing slicks complete the GT3-inspired package.

Ferrari has also upgraded the brakes and cooling, while a recalibrated ABS is designed to make the car more approachable for drivers with different skill levels.

Inside, the race-bred cockpit gets a competition steering wheel, digital display, carbon fiber, racing harnesses and window nets. Unlike a conventional GT3 car, however, the Modificata has two seats, allowing an instructor to ride alongside the driver through an integrated intercom system.

It also features requisite racecar electronics such as expanded data acquisition, onboard video, a rear camera, and infrared tire monitoring, with rear radar and personalized liveries available as options.

The “Modificata” name dates back to Ferrari’s 512 M Sports racing prototype of 1970 that was built to battle the Porsche 917 and has since been revived for specific models including the 488 GT Modificata and 499P Modificata.

Ferrari has yet to disclose production numbers, but says the 296 GT Modificata will be extremely limited. Each purchase includes two years, or 12 rounds, of Club Competizioni GT participation, with the 2027 season visiting Jerez, Misano, Fuji, Indianapolis, Paul Ricard and Spa-Francorchamps before the Finali Mondiali.
