Drivers beware: Your passenger’s road rage involvement could cost you your license
Passenger road rage can put your driver’s license at risk
Road rage has long been a problem for many Pinoy motorists. Remember Rolito Go? In 1991, a road rage incident involving Go along Wilson Street in San Juan ended in the tragic death of 25-year-old engineering student Eldon Maguan, following what started as a simple traffic altercation.
Today, with social media and smartphones in practically everyone’s hands, road rage incidents can quickly be captured on video and make the rounds online.
And keeping your own cool behind the wheel may not be enough. If your passengers lose their temper and get involved in a road rage incident, you could still find yourself facing authorities.
Just recently, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) issued a Show Cause Order (SCO) against the driver of a utility vehicle following a road rage incident in Antipolo City involving three of his passengers.
In the viral video, three passengers got out of the utility vehicle and got into a fistfight with an individual. According to the LTO, the driver saw what was happening but failed to de-escalate the situation, which could have ended in a more serious incident.

The SCO also placed the driver’s license under an automatic 90-day suspension. The vehicle was likewise placed under alarm status while the investigation is ongoing.
The driver has been directed to appear before the LTO’s Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) at the LTO Central Office on September 16, 2026. He must submit a notarized affidavit and will be given the opportunity to explain why he should not be declared an Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle, along with other possible administrative cases under existing laws and regulations.
The LTO again reminded motorists and passengers to stay calm despite the challenges they may encounter on the road.
“The LTO will continue to take appropriate action against incidents involving dangerous and irresponsible behavior on the road and ensure that those involved undergo the proper process in accordance with existing laws and regulations.”
The 1991 case involving Rolito Go and Eldon Maguan is a grim reminder that road rage is nothing new, and that a simple traffic argument can turn serious in a matter of seconds. That is likely why the LTO is taking these incidents very seriously, even when they involve passengers rather than the driver himself.
