BMW turns M5 Touring into Autobahn patrol

How would you like an M5 Touring as a high-speed police interceptor?

Trying to outrun the police could prove a lot harder when they’re behind the wheel of something like this.

German police forces already have plenty of BMW 5 Series Touring models in their fleets, but this one takes the familiar police wagon to an entirely different level.

BMW has built a one-off M5 Touring in Polizei livery, creating what could be one of the fastest police wagons on Germany’s roads.

Developed under the supervision of BMW M’s Head of Development Authority and Special Vehicle/Functional Safety Sascha Eifel, along with former development chief Dirk Häcker, the project started with one simple task: make the M5 look the part.

BMW already supplies 5 Series Touring models to Germany’s Federal Police, so the familiar blue, white, and fluorescent yellow livery was readily available.

However, the M5 Touring’s significantly wider body and more aggressive bumpers meant the graphics had to be redesigned around its swollen fenders.

Once wrapped, fitted with a roof-mounted light bar, and dressed in Polizei colors, the M5 Touring looks every bit like a legitimate police interceptor. There is one catch: it isn’t actually ready to chase criminals.

BMW says the car remains a showpiece and lacks the specialized equipment required for operational police duty. Even the rear-door graphics differ from a regular Bavarian police car, with BMW’s own logo used in place of the Bavarian state flag.

Underneath all that police hardware is the same powertrain that makes the M5 Touring seriously quick. Its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 works with a plug-in hybrid system to produce 717 PS and 1,000 Nm of torque.

That combination would make the M5 Touring an obvious candidate for high-speed motorway patrols, where Germany’s unrestricted Autobahn sections could put its performance to good use.

At the other end of the spectrum, its plug-in hybrid system can deliver up to 65 kms of electric driving, allowing it to stealthily patrol urban areas with little more than tire noise.

For now, BMW isn’t saying that an M5 Touring police car is headed for German streets. But Eifel appears hopeful that interest from police departments could turn this one-off into something more.

Once it gets the official go-ahead, criminals might want to think twice before trying to outrun the Polizei.
