Volvo Cars has initiated a global safety recall affecting over 40,000 units of its EX30 electric crossover. The action comes after internal investigations identified a defect within certain high-voltage battery modules that could cause thermal buildup, presenting a potential fire risk.

The recall covers EX30 units equipped with the 69 kWh extended-range battery pack, encompassing both the Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance variants. The issue traces back to a manufacturing anomaly in battery cells supplied to the Swedish brand. Under certain conditions, charging the pack to a high state of charge can trigger excessive heating within the cells, which could lead to smoke, dashboard warning lights, or a thermal runaway event.

Volvo noted that reported incidents remain extremely low—representing roughly 0.02 percent of affected vehicles worldwide—with zero reported injuries. Nevertheless, the automaker is proceeding with full component replacements. Authorized Volvo service centers will inspect affected vehicles and swap out compromised high-voltage battery modules free of charge.

As a precaution while replacement modules are distributed, Volvo is instructing owners within the recall batch to cap their maximum charging limit at 70 percent via the central infotainment screen. Capping the charge prevents the voltage stress that triggers thermal buildup.

Silence from local distributor

In the Philippines, the EX30 serves as the entry point to Volvo’s local EV lineup with a starting price of ₱2,990,000. However, local distributor Hariphil Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI) has yet to issue an official advisory regarding whether Philippine-spec EX30 units are included in the global recall scope or if local deliveries use battery cells from the affected batch.

Owners who want to verify the status of their vehicles can reach out directly to their official dealer or check their 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through Volvo’s global service portal.
