Hand-built Ford Escort model is (probably) worth more than the real thing
This Ford Escort replica is made out of silver, diamonds, and gold
Where do you normally expect to find pieces of gold, diamond or silver? If you said "jewelry", then you're correct. However, luxury cars, as well as some high-performance vehicles, also make use of such materials. From giving the cabin a more opulent finish, to helping the engine cool faster after a hot lap, these sought-after materials can help automobiles in plenty of ways.
One man by the name of Russel Lord, a professional jeweler, and gear head, thought to himself to make use of these materials in a completely different manner. Instead of just using small increments of gold, silver, and diamonds, Lord used a plethora of them to make this 1:25 scale model of the humble second-generation Ford Escort.
That's right, this small scale model car is not just made up of steel, aluminum, and plastic. Almost every aspect of this particular build is made of exquisite materials. Its wheels, brakes, and spoiler are made out of gold while the front grill is made up of 18-karat white gold. There's also the 72-point diamond headlights, orange sapphire turn signals, ruby taillights and coke bottle-shaped body made out of silver.
Lord first started work on this Escort 25 years ago as a simple hobby. Using Ari Vatanen's works rally car from the 1970's as inspiration, Lord poured thousands of hours to make the scale model as close to the real thing. Plus, he has owned over 55 Escorts throughout his life which means he is no stranger to the Blue Oval.
“It’s been a hobby that I’ve come back to again and again but three years ago I determined to finish it. I know this car inside out – so there were no plans I just built it from the ground up piece by piece,” said Lord.
Aside from having a beautiful and meticulously-designed exterior, Lord also installed spinning pulleys on the engine, a movable stick shift that comes with diamond-encrusted platinum, and windows made from real glass.
Thinking of buying probably one of the most expensive scale model cars? Russel Lord's pristine second-gen Ford Escort will be auctioned off online at www.themarket.co.uk on May 2, 2019. All of the proceeds that the car will receive will be donated to charity.
Cheers to Lord Russel for actually combining two of his passions in life and making this Ford Escort build a reality.
