Shell PH to host Eco-Marathon 2014
Participating teams will run through an urban track at Luneta Park, Manila
Shell Philippines will have a milestone as it hosts the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2014 here in our country. The public run will start on October 23, 2013 at the grounds of SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia. The run will coincide with the 61st Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) National Congress.
Shell introduced the Eco-Marathon to be an educational platform that highlights innovation, conservation, and energy efficiency. The event has been going in Europe for over 25 years, later on reaching the Americas, and most recently Asia with the 2010 Eco-Marathon held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The competition aims to have participants design and build the world’s most fuel-efficient vehicle. Competing teams can enter two categories namely the Futuristic prototypes and Urban Concept vehicles.
In the 2010 competition at the Sepang International Circuit, Philippines was represented by Don Bosco Technical College, Mapua Institute of Technology, and University of Sto. Tomas.
In August 2013, Philippines was back for the Eco-Marathon 2013. De La Salle University, Mapua Institute of Technology, and University of San Carlos Cebu each garnered awards for different categories.
For the 2014 competition, teams will run through the Luneta Park in Manila. Each lap at the designed urban track will be 1.2 km where the vehicles have to complete 10 laps. The time limits given are 24 minutes for the Prototype category and 29 minutes for the Urban Concept category.
