Porsche gathers 8,000 fans for Luftgekühlt 12 despite storm threat
Around 300 air-cooled Porsches took over Atlanta, with the 935’s 50th anniversary and the marque’s Targa Florio racing legacy taking center stage
Air-cooled Porsches may be getting further removed from the modern era, but their appeal remains as strong as ever.

Just ask the 8,000 enthusiasts who gathered at Town at Trilith near Atlanta, Georgia, for Luftgekühlt 12, a celebration of Porsche’s air-cooled road and racing cars.

Founded in 2014 by two-time Le Mans class winner Patrick Long and creative director Howie Idelson, Luftgekühlt has grown from a parking lot gathering into a globally recognized event that continues to draw air-cooled Porsche enthusiasts from around the world.

Despite hurricane warnings that forced organizers to delay the start, Luftgekühlt 12 still drew around 300 cars to Atlanta, a fitting backdrop as the home of Porsche Cars North America since 1998.
This year’s event put the spotlight on two significant chapters in Porsche’s motorsport history.

The first was the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 935, with several examples on display, including the 935 K3 that won the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans. Driven by Don and Bill Whittington alongside Klaus Ludwig.
The Whittington brothers also had a connection to the venue, having purchased Road Atlanta around the time of their historic victory.

Luftgekühlt 12 also celebrated 70 years since Porsche’s first overall victory at the Targa Florio. The legendary Sicilian road race helped establish the marque’s reputation in endurance competition, with four notable cars representing its legacy.

The 718 RSK, which lost its chance at victory to a suspension failure on the final lap in 1959; the winning RS 60 from 1960; the 904 Carrera GTS that took the 1964 victory; and the 908/3, developed for the demanding Targa Florio and Nürburgring circuits.

Other highlights included a Gulf-liveried Porsche 917K with ties to Formula One driver Jo Siffert and Steve McQueen’s 1971 film “Le Mans”, as well as a restored 1957 Porsche 356 A Outlaw built from salvaged and repurposed body sections.

Beyond the cars, the gathering brought together familiar names from the racing world, including event host Tommy Kendall, a four-time Trans-Am Series winner, and racing driver and Porsche collector Leh Keen, whose Keen Project builds reinterpret classic 911s.

For Luftgekühlt creative director Jeff Zwart, the event is about more than assembling rare machinery. “Every event is an evolution on an evolution. We want to find new stories to tell,” says creative director Jeff Zwart.

Despite the storm warnings, Luftgekühlt 12 did just that and more by keeping Porsche’s air-cooled heritage alive and proving that the passion behind these machines is just as enduring as the cars themselves.
