Honda and Nissan join forces on smart car operating system arriving by 2029

Honda and Nissan have officially agreed to share the digital heavy lifting for their future cars, signing a joint development deal to build common ECUs (electronic control units) and operating systems for their next-generation SDVs (software-defined vehicles).

This follows reports late last month of the two companies resuming talks on collaboration after a failed merger in early 2025.

Instead of building competing tech from scratch, the two Japanese automakers are pooling their resources to create a unified software and electronic foundation. Think of it like Apple and Android providing the core operating system for smartphones; Honda and Nissan want a single, highly efficient digital backbone that will power their future cars from fiscal year 2029 onward.

For daily drivers, this means future Honda and Nissan vehicles will be much smarter and easier to keep up-to-date. By standardizing the central vehicle computers and underlying software, both brands can offer seamless over-the-air updates—allowing owners to receive feature upgrades, safety improvements, and software fixes remotely without having to visit a dealership, much like updating a mobile phone.

The shared tech will also power advanced driver assistance systems, smart safety features, and real-time connected services across both brands.

Co-developing this complex digital network helps both companies slash research costs, speed up production, and stay competitive against rapidly growing high-tech vehicle brands from the US and China.

Despite sharing the internal digital hardware and software foundation, both manufacturers assured drivers that Honda and Nissan vehicles will still look, feel, and drive completely differently on the road, maintaining each brand's distinct styling, driving dynamics, and unique features.
