BYD reveals Sealion 6-based pickup in Brazil
BYD has just made a pickup truck for those who find the Shark a little too big for their liking.
Early photos have emerged about the new Mako PHEV – a plug-in hybrid pickup truck that BYD intends to sell in the Latin America market, specifically in Brazil.

The BYD Mako shares the same platform as the Song Plus, otherwise known as the Sealion 6 in the Philippine market. But to optimize the platform’s use for cargo transport, BYD has specifically reinforced the vehicle's spring and shock absorber structure to enhance its load-bearing capacity.
The new Mako features a large grille reminiscent of the pre-facelift version of the Sealion 6 in China, exuding a powerful presence. Much like the bigger Shark, the rear boasts a continuous LED taillight design, paired with exclusive black cladding and 18-inch black alloy wheels. A tow hook also comes standard, making the Mako suitable for towing light trailers, motorboats, and other similar applications.

Inside, the dashboard also appears to be taken from the parts bin of the Sealion 6, featuring a full LCD digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch floating central control screen, along with the physical control buttons on the center console.
According to Autohome, the BYD Mako is equipped with the fifth-generation DM plug-in hybrid system, which consists of a 1.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. Paired with a 12.9kWh battery pack, delivering a combined system power of 166 kW or 225 PS.
It features a DHT automatic gearbox and a front-wheel-drive layout, but Autohome says BYD has also planned an all-wheel-drive version. Notably, the Mako’s powertrain supports ethanol fuel, optimized for the Brazilian market.

The new vehicle will be launched in Brazil in September. According to the report, the initial units of the Mako will be exported from China, but subsequent local production is in the pipeline.
Currently, the Radar RD6 is the sole midsize unibody pickup truck being offered in the Philippines. Should BYD challenge the RD6 with the Mako? Let us know in the comments.
