2022 MG6 Pro: Sports sedan pretender or the real deal?

Is the 2022 MG6 pro more than just a sedan with a body kit?

A few months ago, MG presented the MG6 Xpower concept. It was essentially a touring car for the road, albeit with a complete interior, an infotainment system, and air-conditioning. At the time, MG said they will put something similar to that into production.

MG kept true to their word, at least for the most part, by introducing the MG6 Pro. While it's not the same 340 PS race car with license plates, it does get neat upgrades to turn it into a true sports sedan. Of course, that's what MG claims. So is the MG6 Pro more than just a family sedan with a body kit? Let's take a look at the mods.

From the outside, the MG6 Pro wants to be taken seriously. It sports a more aggressive bumper with a deeper chin and larger intakes. The grille also has a racier pattern for good measure. Gloss black highlights are featured throughout the exterior from trimmings to the side mirror caps. The MG6 Pro also wears a unique set of alloy wheels that are exclusive to this model. A black wing at the back and bumper diffusers round up the upgrades.

Inside, the first thing we noticed was the lack of a third pedal. Yes, this racy-looking car doesn't have a manual transmission. That said, it makes up for it by having a pair of thick bucket seats, a leather-suede combination steering wheel, and yellow-orange highlights to show its sporting intentions.

So far, the only things listed are cosmetic changes. Did MG do anything under the hood or its chassis? For the latter, yes. MG says they upgraded its suspension for flatter cornering and improved road-holding. Those alloy wheels aren't for show either as these are wrapped in 225/45 tires. These are slightly wider than the ones fitted to the standard model. As for the engine, it's still the same 1.5-liter turbo with 181 PS and 285 Nm of torque. While the figure is unchanged, it's still considerably more than the outgoing model's 166 PS and 250 Nm rating. That engine shifts with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

All in all, the MG6 Pro is more of a handling package for the regular version than an outright sports sedan. While we wouldn't blame anyone for expecting more, a car with over 180 PS and sharper suspension should offer a fun driving experience. Of course, we're still waiting for MG to go all out on this model and build the XPower version down the line.

But for now, all we can do is wait for MG to roll out the facelifted model in the country soon.
